Urban Shield
Acid-Resistant Denim Streetwear
This project, titled "Urban Shield: Acid-Resistant Denim Streetwear," aims to address the alarming rise in acid attacks by creating a fashionable yet protective outfit. The initiative seeks to blend denim's rugged, timeless appeal with advanced acid-resistant materials to offer effective protection without sacrificing style.
Inspired by the silhouette of Indian sarees—reflecting India's status as one of the most affected countries—the design retains a casual streetwear look while incorporating traditional elements. The use of red, an auspicious color in Indian culture that symbolizes strength and positivity, further enhances the garment's cultural resonance.
Through rigorous research, testing, and development, the project aspires to introduce a new category of protective clothing that empowers individuals to feel secure and confident in their daily lives, ultimately making a significant positive impact on those at risk of acid attacks.

I was initially inspired by various crimes around the world and focused my research on those that disproportionately affect women and often go unpunished. Coming from India, I found that one of the most prevalent crimes against women is acid attacks, which typically target unsuspecting women on the streets.
The primary focus of my outfit design is protection. During my research, I learned about the traumatic experiences women endure and the physical impact of these attacks on their bodies. I focused on studying the body parts most commonly affected in such unexpected assaults, using this knowledge to inform my designs. I also experimented with different body parts to better understand the direction of my ideas.
I focused mainly on the Indian market, drawing inspiration from the saree's cultural silhouettes. I aimed to create a garment that was effective, breathable, and comfortable for everyday wear.
To infuse the design with a strong mentality, I incorporated a bold, positive element by using a stark red contrast, as red is associated with auspiciousness and holiness in the culture.

Fabrics that are resistant to acid are all types of synthetic ones. However, I discovered that denim, made of cotton, is also resistant to acid due to its weaves. The thicker the denim, the tighter the weave. Through this research, I also explored the trends and news about denim and found that it is considered a classic fabric that will remain timeless for future seasons.
